much love monday: waking up early

OKAY, for those who know me, this is going to come completely out of left field.  my circadian rhythm is much more night-owl than early bird.  i often get into an incredible art-zone between 11 pm and 2 am, which is something completely unparalleled when i wake up early.  but for september, i have to be up around 5 am to get to work on time, and on the weekends i’m keeping myself to the same schedule so i don’t get totally fucked on monday mornings.

last week, biking to work before 6 am, i could not believe how beautiful, peaceful and warm it was.  the sun began to rise as i was cycling; the sky changed colours, the stars faded, the sun started to reflect off all the glass downtown and turn it burning gold against the dark blue of the sky, the early-bird prostitutes were out in full force, and i nearly biked over a pack of snarling raccoons.  okay, so not all magic, but it was peaceful and so enjoyable.

this weekend it was so great to get up early, too, because i went boxing both days and my gym is a lot better when there’s no one there and i can get more personal instruction for the first part of the session, which is when i really need it.

although going to bed at 9pm is kind of a bummer and fatal for one’s social life, i’m really looking forward to getting up early for the rest of the month, which is strange but also wonderful.

  1. I try to go to bed at 9pm but it usually slips to 10 instead. I have to be up between 5:45 and 6am and it kills me. My body hates waking that early, always has. I’ve always suspected my body really craves a good 9 1/2 to 10 hours of sleep a night, not kidding, but that’s just not possible. Sometimes not even on weekends! But when I do have to get up early and actually be somewhere at 6am I do agree it can be so beautiful. Living at the bottom of Pikes Peak here along the Rocky Mountains is just gorgeous and “purple mountains majesties” is so true when the rising sun bounces the purple and pinks all over the mountain top.
